In the beginning...

When we joined forces officially as a couple in Indianapolis, 2015, we knew right away that they wanted to have a little one together to add to our existing family of Trae's wonderful three children Zach, Ella and Kerry (ages 21, 14 and 10).

In fact, "Now go make a baby!" was the most consistent injunction of our parents as part of their speeches at our wedding reception!

We didn't waste any time... but, the journey getting here was longer than any of anticipated, and has strengthened both of us immensely--as individuals, as a couple, and in our own understanding of faith, determination and community. Our faith and strength were tested three times as April experienced three miscarriages in a row.

Each time, we re-determined in our faith and prayer, and pursued answers through the help of medical specialists as well as the helpful stories and wisdom of friends, families, and healers in our circle. Just as important was the emotional and moral support these folks so willingly gave us -- both our loved ones as well as those nurses, doctors & other medical staff who encountered us in both moments of loss and of hope and trying, and showed amazing compassion, humanity & love.

With the spirit of our Buddhist practice & community to "Never Be Defeated" and all of this amazing support backing us, we tried a fourth time and... after a somewhat anxious first trimester, finally passed the risky window and began to truly celebrate. Since then, we celebrate each week that passes with a big "high-five."

It is true that victories hard-won are sweeter than those that come easily. And of course, we both know (Trae with more actual experience) that pregnancy is just the beginning of the many tests and trials that parenting will present! We know that our lil' Woop Woop will continue to teach and spur us to grow to new heights and depths we cannot even anticipate now... and are constantly grateful and humbled to know that the many resources of love, wisdom & support that emerged to help us get here are still at our fingertips (if we can make sure we remember to reach out and ask!)

Thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts, to all of you who have cheered us on through every dip and swale of this amazing path. We always feel you with us and hope that we can continue to be such true friends to you as well, when you need us.
